A Community Built by Listening, Leadership, and Shared Growth

Editor's Note

I remember looking around the room at KPWA’s 10th anniversary conference and noticing how many different leadership journeys were sitting side by side. People came from different industries and career stages, yet there was a shared understanding that none of us arrived here alone.

What stood out most was how people listened. There were moments of quiet focus, moments of laughter, and a sense of trust that made the space feel grounded and connected. Many recognized parts of their own journeys in the stories being told.

That moment reminded me why KPWA exists. Mentorship, role models, and strong support systems matter. They shape how we grow, how we lead, and how we show up for one another over time.

This blog begins from that place. It is a place rooted in connection, belonging, and the belief that leadership is built together.

KPWA at 10 Years: What We've Learned Together

Last year, KPWA marked its 10‑year anniversary, a moment to look back on how the community has grown since the organization began.

KPWA was founded by five Korean‑Canadian women who understood how challenging professional growth can feel when cultural expectations, limited networks, and questions of belonging intersect. From the beginning, the organization was built on the belief that leadership grows stronger through shared responsibility, insight, and support.

Across conversations at the 10th Year Anniversary Conference, a common theme emerged. There is no single way to lead. Leadership takes shape through authenticity, courage, and learning alongside others. For many members, KPWA has been the place where uncertainty paved the way for growth, and individual journeys became collective momentum.

This way of thinking is often described as a forest of leaders, where leadership is cultivated collectively rather than centred in a single role. It speaks to how trust, accountability, and diverse strengths allow leadership to grow across a community.

Today, our commitment to connection and growth remains constant. We continue to listen and respond to the evolving needs of our community. Through responsive programming and engagement, our committees turn what we hear from our members into action.

Our Pillars

Our work is anchored in three interconnected pillars.

Mentorship

Mentorship remains central to KPWA through our mentorship programs and relationships built on advocacy and ongoing learning.

Leadership

We support leadership development across career stages, recognizing that leadership grows through experience, reflection, and practice.

Civic Engagement

KPWA fosters engagement beyond individual careers, amplifying collective voice and meaningful impact within our broader communities.

KPWA 2.0: Leading With Listening

At our recent Meet the Leaders event, KPWA President Monica Hahm reflected on how leadership reshaped her understanding of responsibility and connection.

Coming from professional environments where Korean representation was limited, KPWA offered a space where cultural identity and professional ambition could exist together. That connection made taking on the presidency feel both humbling and meaningful.

One of the defining lessons of leadership, she reflected, was the importance of listening.

Drawing on the experiences of early-career professionals, Monica emphasized what members need most to feel supported, seen, and able to contribute with confidence. Leadership, as she shared, is about listening, creating space, and fostering a sense of belonging so others can step forward.

This approach sits at the heart of KPWA. We believe mentorship is most effective when it is woven into the culture of an organization, shaping how people support and grow alongside one another.
